The Secret Ingredient in Merck & Moderna's Cancer Vaccine Is an Algorithm

Here's a sentence I did not expect to type this year: a cancer vaccine's ingredients were written by software, not a chemist.

Merck and Moderna's personalized mRNA melanoma vaccine, mRNA-4157 (V940), just cleared a late-stage trial when combined with Keytruda (pembrolizumab). Nothing strange about a vaccine succeeding in a trial. What's strange is how this one gets made. An algorithm scans a patient's own tumor for mutations, works out which neoantigens — the mutated proteins unique to that tumor — are most likely to provoke an immune response, then a vaccine gets built for that one patient, and no one else.

No template. No one-size-fits-all batch. Just code, reading a tumor, and deciding what the immune system should be shown.

If this gets approved, it would be the first medicine on the market whose active genetic instructions came out of software rather than a chemist's bench. Say that out loud a few times and it starts to sound less like science fiction and more like a genuine shift in how new medicine gets designed — computational biology, personalized medicine, and oncology, folded into a single injection.

So here's the question I keep coming back to: if the algorithm designs the drug, who really deserves the credit — the chemist, or the code?
