Is 2026 actually a turning point for cancer treatment, or does it just feel that way because I've been reading about it all year?
STAT News asked something close to the same question in a recent piece, and their answer leans toward "turning point." Look at what's landed in just the past several months: Revolution Medicines' KRAS-targeted drug delivering real results in spring, daraxonrasib getting approved for pancreatic cancer, and Merck and Moderna's mRNA neoantigen vaccine clearing a late-stage trial. Three separate stories, three separate companies, three separate mechanisms.
I'll be honest, I'm usually skeptical of "this changes everything" framing in medicine. Progress in oncology is normally slow, incremental, and easy to overstate. But these three don't read like isolated wins to me. They're genomic targeting, personalized vaccines, and precision-oncology infrastructure, all maturing on roughly the same timeline. That kind of convergence wasn't possible three or four years ago, simply because the underlying science and infrastructure weren't ready yet.
Maybe it's too early to call 2026 a genuine inflection point for cancer care. But it's not too early to say something is compounding, and it's worth watching closely.
